For all of you wiping tears over the fact your babies are growing up, I have news for ya. They'll always be your babies. I've just spent the afternoon watching my 19-year-old play "war" outside with a couple buddies and their airsoft guns.

I hate guns. I'm a vegetarian. But we live in a pseudo-country environment where it's not terribly uncommon for a kid to own a real hunting gun. Anyway, when he was 13 all he wanted for his 14th birthday was an airsoft. He talked non-stop about it for a year until he finally saved up and bought it himself with his own money. I caved. For those of you who don't know what an airsoft gun is, they shoot hollow plastic pellets of air. It's just enough to give you a good sting when hit, but not enough to maim. Still I put my foot down. The rule around here is they have to wear goggles. So he's been out there with his goggles shooting at his begoggled friends all afternoon. Their "gun" paraphernalia is spread all over the living room, and it looks like a group of terrorists live here. I guess I'm the only mom in the neighborhood who'll put up with the noise. There are advantages to having a deaf mom.

He only moved home for the summer a couple weeks ago. To make room for some of his college gear, we had to condense the huge plastic bin of legos he had in his bedroom closet. Though he played with them over Christmas break *with a girl!--during a date!!* he finally conceded they could go in the garage for storage.

Up until today he had an action figure decorating his windowsill-- a red ape with green hair. He put that in his closet right next to "Blue Bear"-- a small six-inch stuffed light blue bear he's had since he was a newborn. He hasn't given Blue Bear up completely, but they don't sleep together anymore.

Yeah-- we talk politics and he can run errands picking up stuff at the grocery store, and he's planning to barbecue dinner tonight. He's big help-- but grown-up??? Good Lord. . .!

Okay, okay, I give, you win! and I tell Gage this daily, "no matter how old you get, you'll always be my baby", he couldn't believe it! I explained that PawPaw(my dad) was still MawMaw's baby who is Gage's great-grandmother. He could not believe someone that "old" is someone's baby. I'll look forward to the legos on a date....should I keep the hot wheels too?

Awww playing legos with a date? That's very unusual ;)

Your boy is growing up.

I wouldn't mind young men playing with airguns... just as long as they aren't using real guns or at war : /

My 90 years old grandmother fretted when her son went out of state for his 50th high school reunion. Nevermind that she lived in his house where he took care of her. Once a baby, always a baby to the mother :)

Awww...

You have survived dealing with the "teenage" syndrome! Your son is only one more "teen" year to go.... ;-)

That's all my fifteen year old kid wants is an airsoft gun. Like you, I don't like guns but I know that if he used one, he would use it responsibly. Goggles would have to be mandatory-- especially for a deaf kid who needs his eyes. :)

I love this post. I always tell Dan that no matter what, he will always be my baby. He is ok with that! Even at 14

I am smiling... My 26 year old son to this day regrets selling his arsenal of HeMan, Masters of the Universe, figurines, weapons, vehicles and various castles/mountains in a moment of weakness. Every time he thinks on his childhood toys, he gets that sad face regarding his yard sale faux pas in the quest for cash for books.

So, for Valentines Day this past February, I sent him a vintage HeMan and Battlecat in near mint condition from eBay. I have never heard more joy than that evident in his instant message the day he received his package. It is the best $40.00 I have ever spent!! If we are lucky they are forever young. Michele

I'm pretty sure that for the male of the species, while they may grow older, they never grow up.

I hid my son's Barney stuffed dinosaur for the future, when he finally grew out of wanting it with him.

Kim, I can so relate to this! My 18 year old still loves his action figures. :-)

He's the reason we went to see Iron Man -- when he found out they were making a movie based on Iron Man, he went nuts because he was one of Eric's favorite superheroes. His reaction was so cute! (And the movie is fantastic, so it was a good thing all around!)

He's moving into his dorm in less than 2 months and I will miss him SO MUCH. I told him it doesn't matter that he's now technically an adult...he'll always be my baby boy. :-)
