A Message to Deaf Vloggers

"If all vlogs created by hearing people have subtitles, then I will add them to my vlogs.I guess it is all depends on who you want to target with your vlogs. For me, Deaf community and ASL users. I guess it's matter of preference here." Unnamed Deaf V/blog Commenter

Five Things I Wish You Knew--

1) It bothers me that hearing people don’t caption their vlogs too.

2) I wish I knew ASL better, so I wouldn’t need to ask you to caption your vlogs.

3) You sign too fast for me, and I want to know you.

4) While I've been losing my hearing a long time, I haven't been at this level of silence very long. I'm still adjusting.

5) I want to learn from you.

Great!

You said so much with so little - I am impressed! Great points you've made as well.

I would like to be able to understand vloggers' vlogs too. I think asking them to subtitle them is an undue burden though. It is also time consuming. If they could just have a few sentences along with the vlog to summarize the episode, I think that would be enough for me. We can't be part of the conversation or build bridges between communities if we don't know what they're saying.

Kim,
It is all so frustrating this desire for communication and communication roadblocks...oh, to only have the time to make it all easier...important blog...hugs, Jodi

Hello, I appreciate your post. Since I am not tech savvy, I do the transcript or summary. Does it help? I must admit that I didn't do the transcript at my vlogs sometimes. It's something I need to do at all times from now on. Once again, I appreciate your post.

Oh, that's so sweet of you.

I wish I'd have my vlog captioned, but I don't know how. I tried it, but I had a struggle with it. I'd love to have someone show me how.

Would you like it to be captioned or a transcript below a vlog?

Hey Kim --

I feel for you!

I know it's hard for all of us. All of my life, I have lived with the communication barriers here, everywhere, and around the world.

Especially, the tourists are dealing with the people who cannot speak english.

Therefore, we are all the same boat.

There is a big but.

I feel guilty about the hearing loss/deaf people in the past. They did *NOT* have the technology information and equipments. I have thought about them alot. I wanna to owe them because They went through some horrible and tough times. I owe them an apology.

Will post in Paotie's much later. :-)

Yeah, I agree with you Kim~

Like Seek Geo said, it is a matter of personal choice and If I had a vlog and am able to create subtitles, I would!

That is okay, whenever you feel comfortable with your being Deaf and learn ASl in your way that is fine. I understand number of Deaf Vloggers express in ASL too fast, You can understand by repeating and repeating until you follow up much easier. I do not like captained on vlog that cause me more confused because when I watch ASL in that vloggers I would think in ASL when I see English in that captioned I can not think two things at sametime. I read English I would think in English. It is good for you to challenge yourself when you find how frustrating but it would help you in a long run!!!

Hi Kim!

Ha! I find it funny that people kept saying *IF* all hearing captions their vlogs, then they will. They had to say it because they know it will never happen, it's their way of excuse saying it.

Beside, someone out there have to start something, right which is why I started it. I don't sit back and say, ok I won't provide caption until hearing do it.

Great post... you made my morning!! He he

Exactly!

We d/Deaf have complained for many years about lack of communication access in the hearing world.

Those who use ASL and vlogs without captioning are not thinking about communication access for all deaf across the board. How are we who are also deaf sisters and brothers going to understand your ASL messages and your side of deafness issues?

I realize that for many vloggers captioning can be time-consuming and a hassle. But not all of us deaf can afford the time or money for ASL classes, so online vlogs with captioning is one way we can learn.

The kind of captioning where one can turn it on/off as desired is a real advantage. Those who get distracted by the captioning can turn it off. And those, like Kim and me, can learn ASL and then turn on the captioning to see if we got the gist of the signed message right to test our "reading" sign skills. Wishful thinking, I guess.

Transcript is better than nothing next to a vlog without captioning.

I do appreciate the efforts of those vloggers who put captioning in or include a transcript with their vlogs. Many thanks.

Oh, I wish they were captioned too! I love watching them, but have no idea what they're saying...and I hate that. Even though I do know a few signs, I'm so slow that I can barely pick up the ones that I do know!!
I agree with what you said...I want to get to know them better and learn from them, too...and since most of them just show video clips, and no writing, it's hard :).
Going to HAVE go get busy and practice my signs!

Hi--I'm just now getting a chance to pop into my own blog and respond to everyone.

First of all, Deb Ann, Kim, Paula, DeafK, and Candy, YES! Transcriptions help. I appreciate those who transcribe and I do understand not everyone can caption.

Until there's a technology that makes it easier, I doubt most people will make the effort on either side--Hearing and Deaf-- except those with the technical know-how.

There are pros and cons to transcription vs captioning while learning ASL that a single comment can't adequately address. Maybe I'll blog about that sometime later. Just know that captioning is best. I agree that being able to switch on and off would be ideal. The next best solution is to cover the words. I also do that to see if I can guess what you're saying first. But transcriptions are better than nothing and I so appreciate those who do that!! :-)

White Ghost--Yes you're right. When Mt. St. Helens blew in WA state the news wasn't captioned and in some cases deaf people in eastern WA didn't know why the had sky turned black. I feel badly about that too.

Hi Paotie and Jodi--Thanks for stopping by. *Big Blog Hugs* back. Paotie, I anxious to hear about your research project.

Paula--
It's only a few who feel this way but it's interesting how many Deaf people expressed annoyance by captioning on vlogs. This happened last Monday in ASLPride's vlog and also O_I_C posted a vlog about "lazy ASL students" who shouldn't watch captioned ASL vlogs. Many of the comments in ASLPride's vlog have since been removed because they got too ugly. One vlogger who routinely captioned his vlogs decided to pull out of DeafRead and changed his plans not to attend the DR conference. Another who routinely captioned his vlogs has suddenly stopped.

It's one thing to feel like you personally don't want to caption (or can't) and another to criticize those who caption because the captions annoy you.

It's the same complaint Hearies have, and I find it all super hypocritical. The reason the theaters fought to exclude captioning from the ADA was because Hearing people didn't like captioning. We're STILL fighting that battle today.

I think if Hearing people can get used to captioning, Deaf people can too. :-)

Jennifer and Abbie-- If you want to go to a fantastic FUN vlog where you can learn some ASL and enjoy Deaf culture, try SeekGeo's vlog. I have it bookmarked on my page. It's always captioned. He's friendly and committed to inclusion. Thanks SG. I love you. :-)

Hi Platonic's Eye--
Thanks for stopping by and for your thoughtful comments. I do just exactly what you said. It's just that without being able to ask questions, it's impossible to know what a sign means if I haven't seen it before, and that throws me off. With other languages, you can look words up in a dictionary. With ASL, there is no reverse dictionary I can go to to find a sign I've seen. If I know what I want to say I can look it up that way, but if I see a sign I don't know, I have to ask. It's impossible when watching a vlog. This is what makes ASL more difficult to learn than other languages.

Thumbs up, Kim, and thanks for your reply. I will ask Geo to help me with that, or I'll go ahead to transcribe each time I make a vlog! Guess what, Sarah showed her videos on her blog about her sons eating jellybeans and signed! Can you, too (about anything)?

Kim said...

Hi Deb Ann-- usually you are pretty good about transcribing at least a little bit. :-) I am hoping to get my VP hooked up again soon. That would help tremendously, wouldn't it? I used to talk to a few deaf people before I got my new laptop. It just sits here on top the TV collecting dust. I wouldn't feel comfortable vlogging yet, especially after the some of the negative comments to Deaf Muslim last week. I really admire Sarah's bravery, and I noticed your kind comments. :-) I do hope everyone is nice to her. Y'all have to remember how hard this is! :-)

Kim!

Off the point.

I know you were very busy upsetting about the CART that Tayler (DR) failed to reply to you.....

I am glad that J.J. Puorro took care of your situation.

I HONESTLY recalled that you requested him to have the CART for the DR conference. Somehow he deleted it. I do not know why.

If you need some help, like a witness or else, please let me know. :-)

I am gonna give you a pinky hug. :-)

Thank you so much White Ghost :-) I appreciate that you remember, and I'm sure others remember too because I know Paotie commented about it. I even thanked him for his comments in his blog, which can probably be dug up somewhere. I don't plan to pursue it because I'm not going.
